Sony has launched its new flagship headphones in India – the Sony WH-1000XM6! It’s a step up from the XM5, and four months after its global launch, it’s now available here for ₹39,990. I tested it, and it’s the absolute king in ANC, sound quality, and design.

It’ll now have to compete with the AirPods Max and Bose QC Ultra! Let’s see, simply put, what these headphones offer and whether they’re worth the money.

Sony WH-1000XM6 Unboxing: Simple but Solid

Opening the box reveals the feel of eco-friendly recycled materials – Sony’s basic style, but with a premium vibe. What’s inside? Headphones, a hard-shell carrying case with a magnetic flap (no zipper, absolutely easy to open), a USB-C cable for charging, a 3.5mm audio cable, and a manual.

The case also has a strap with Sony branding. There’s no wireless charging stand or extra goodies, but the case’s magnetic closure is a real game-changer – it closes tightly without fuss while traveling.

Design: Foldable and Comfortable

The XM6’s design is similar to the XM5, but now it folds – the XM5 lacked this feature! The case is small in the folded state, making it easy to stow in a bag. Weighing in at 254g, the ear cushions are made of soft memory foam—no pressure even after hours of wearing. The headband is slightly thicker for better support, and the earpads are easily replaced without tools.

Button improvements: The power button is now round to avoid confusion with the ANC button. The 3.5mm jack and ANC/Transparency toggle are on the left side, and the USB-C port is on the right. Stitching is on the back, not the front—making front-back distinctions easier. Colors: Black, Silver, Blue—the silver one looks extremely sleek.

ANC and Transparency: The Best on the Market

This is the biggest plus point of these headphones—with 12 microphones and the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3, the ANC is now the best in the world. Low rumbles completely block out noise, such as aircraft engines or bus noise.

Transparency mode is so natural you’ll forget you’re wearing headphones – AirPods Max level! AI beamforming mics isolate your voice from background noise during calls, so only you can hear the other person. No IP rating for water resistance, but it’s solid for daily use.

Sound Quality: Exceptional and Customizable

Sound is absolutely top-notch – 30mm drivers with 4Hz-40kHz frequency response and 103dB sensitivity. Bass is punchy, mids are clear, highs are crisp – movies, podcasts, or music all feel immersive. EQ customization is in the app: boost bass, adjust treble, or create custom presets. Spatial sound is available with 360 Reality Audio support.

Scene-based Listening detects surroundings and adjusts sound – feel like surround speakers when sitting in a cafe. Auracast support is also available for low-latency gaming and multi-device sharing.

App and Features: Smart and Easy

The app is now Sony Sound Connect (previously Headphones Connect). Control everything from here: Adaptive Sound (detects activity and adjusts ANC), Speak-to-Chat (pauses music while talking), and Quick Attention Mode (turns on transparency by placing your hand).

Multi-device pairing (two devices simultaneously), head gesture controls (nod for yes/no calls), voice commands, and tap controls for play/pause. Battery status checks and firmware updates are also available from here. Features are so many that 1 hour of talking can end the video!

Battery: Long Lasting

30 hours of playback with ANC on, 40 hours with it off – same as the XM5. A 3.5-hour full charge, and a 10-minute quick charge gives 5 hours. You can use it while charging, which wasn’t possible before.

Pricing and Availability: Premium Price Worth It

The price tag in India is ₹39,990 – ₹15,000 more than the XM5, but the upgrades justify it. On sale September 29, 2025: Available at Sony Centers, Croma, Reliance Digital, ShopAtSC.com, and Amazon. It was priced at $449 (₹37,500) globally, but there’s a slight increase here. If budget allows, this is a one-time investment.
