Friends, if you’re considering health insurance, IRDAI has made some major changes in 2025 that could be a game-changer for you! Previously, senior citizens found it difficult to get a policy, or had to wait four years for pre-existing diseases.

Now, everything has become much simpler and more inclusive. I checked out this year’s new guidelines and am sharing how these changes are making your policy easier. Let’s explain in a simple way IRDAI Guidelines for Health Insurance and what has changed and why it’s beneficial!

IRDAI Guidelines for Health Insurance 2025

Big Good for Senior Citizens: No Age Limit

From now on, age is no longer a barrier to health insurance! IRDAI has removed the upper age cap, meaning even people over 65 can take out a new policy without any hindrance. Previously, it was difficult to get a new policy after 65, but now insurers will have to create products for all age groups.

Special policies will also be launched for senior citizens, with separate channels for their claims and complaints. This change was absolutely necessary, because now everyone, regardless of age, can get health cover.

Pre-Existing Disease Waiting Period Reduced: Up to 3 Years

The biggest good news – the waiting period for pre-existing diseases (like diabetes or BP) will no longer exceed 3 years! Previously, it was 4 years, meaning you had to wait 4 years to file a claim. Now, under the new policies, you can claim for your PED treatment after 3 years, whether you disclosed it initially or not.

The waiting period for specific conditions, such as joint replacement, has also been standardized to three years. This rule applies from April 2024 but becomes clearer in 2025. Now you can get coverage quickly, without a long wait!

AYUSH Coverage: Support for Traditional Treatments

Health policies are now required to cover AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy) treatments. Previously, this was optional, but now every policy has clear guidelines for AYUSH.

This means you can also claim the cost of traditional treatments, which are very common in India. This change gives you a choice between modern and traditional medicine.

Premium and Claims: More Transparency

Premium rates, especially for senior citizens, must now be fair and transparent. Insurers will be required to clearly disclose every detail, and premiums cannot be increased once the policy term is fixed.

Regarding claims, there will be no rejections after three years unless there is misrepresentation. Plus, having multiple policies allows you to maximize your benefits without incurring any losses.

Inclusivity: Special for PWD, HIV, and Mental Health

Modifications have been made to products for PWD (Persons with Disabilities), HIV/AIDS, and mental illness. These conditions must now be covered, and waiting periods will be shorter. These guidelines have been created to include everyone, so that no one is left behind.
