The journey of LG and 6G

First came 4G, then 5G, and now the talk is about 6G! LG Electronics has taken new steps to make its leadership in 6G communication even stronger. Now LG’s Senior Research Engineer Kim Lae-young has been appointed Vice Chair in the Service and System Aspects (SA) plenary of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

If you are wondering what is 3GPP, then understand that it is the world’s largest authority for making mobile communication standards.

This SA plenary of 3GPP is very important because it decides:

  • What will be the system architecture of 5G and 6G
  • How the services will work
  • How the security mechanisms will be implemented

In simple words, this group sets the rules and guidelines for future technology.

LG’s Leadership in 6G

Kim Lae-young’s appointment as Vice Chair reflects LG’s expertise. LG has shown leadership in the past as the continuing chair of the Applications Working Group in the North American 6G technology initiative, Next G Alliance, an alliance that helps create the next generation of communications standards.

Now LG’s new role is not just a title; it will help advance LG’s R&D and global standardization efforts. 6G technology will open doors to new innovations such as not just fast internet, but AI-powered smart homes, mobility, and smart factories.

LG’s Research and Partnerships

LG doesn’t just talk, it also works! In 2019, LG established the first dedicated 6G academic research center in Korea, called the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center. Apart from this, LG has also joined hands with big research centers like Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute and Korea’s Research Institute of Standards and Science. All of them work together on core aspects of 6G technology.

One more special thing — from 2022, LG has also started hosting the 6G Grand Summit. This is a global forum where experts from around the world meet and discuss ideas for future connectivity.

LG’s Major Achievements

Talking about achievements, LG successfully completed the world’s longest outdoor terahertz (THz) wireless data transmission in 2022, in which they succeeded in sending data up to 500 meters in an urban setting. This was a big achievement because THz frequencies will play a very important role in the future of 6G.

Apart from this, LG is working on validating Advanced Duplex wireless communication technology with its partners. This technology can become a big part of 6G standards.

What’s in the future?

LG’s vision is very clear – they want to strengthen their leadership and global competitiveness in the 6G communication ecosystem. Je Yeong-ho, head of LG’s C&M Standard Lab, says,

“We are committed to advancing next-generation technologies so that we can reinforce our leadership and enhance global competitiveness.”

6G is not just a game of speed, it is a combination of AI integration, ultra-low latency, and smart connectivity. In the future, your smart homes and smart cities will become much more advanced and connected, and LG is playing a big role in this.
